One to Watch : Elliot Anderson

For Elliott Anderson, the move to Nottingham Forest in 2024 seemed like a step backward in his development. But who could have predicted the way the Newcastle academy graduate would blossom just a year later – a Europa League player and now a full England international. The 2025/26 season is shaping up to be a defining one for the new No. 6 in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Breakthrough Season

The 2024/25 campaign was unforgettable not just for Forest fans but also for Anderson himself. Following his £35 million transfer from Newcastle, the Whitley Bay-born midfielder simply flourished, finding exactly the right environment to grow.

He featured in multiple roles across midfield – as a defensive anchor, a central midfielder, and even further forward as an attacking option. He partnered with several different teammates, including captain Ryan Yates, Nicolas Dominguez, and Ibrahim Sangare. But regardless of the role or partner, Anderson consistently stood out with his performances.

Two goals and six assists in 37 Premier League appearances – missing just one match – underline his importance. His pivotal role in Forest’s push for European qualification earned him a first call-up to the England senior squad only months after the season ended.

The English Dream

Anderson also enjoyed a memorable summer with England’s U21s. Lee Carsley’s side successfully defended their European crown in Slovakia, with Anderson playing in every single game and serving as a near-constant starter in midfield. He even converted a penalty in the quarter-final against Spain.

Soon after, Thomas Tuchel handed him his first senior call-up for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia. Not only did Anderson debut, but he also played the full 90 minutes in both matches. His presence as a holding midfielder freed up Declan Rice to roam higher up the pitch – a tweak that allowed the Arsenal man to score and assist twice. Anderson’s influence was crucial in making it work.

What Comes Next?

The target for Anderson this season is clear: to cement his place in the England squad while delivering another strong campaign under Forest’s new manager. With the World Cup looming, the motivation for the young midfielder is stronger than ever. Another step forward this season could firmly establish him as one of England’s brightest midfield talents.
